Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) is performed to alter the shape of the nose or improve its function. It may be performed for medical reasons, such as to correct breathing problems related to the nose or to correct deformities caused by birth defects and similar causes. It may also be performed for cosmetic and aesthetic reasons to alter the shape and appearance of the nose. However, in addition to the well-known cosmetic benefits of the procedure, rhinoplasty has evolved to encompass far more versatile applications, such as improving nasal function following a traumatic injury or illness, or helping to alleviate respiratory problems that affect sleep and quality of life. The aim of rhinoplasty is to reshape the nose in accordance with the patient’s desired appearance and functionality, whilst taking into account their skin type and the overall facial structure.

Our ENT Specialist, Dr. Dr Nuran Kalekoğlu Erkalp combines the science and art of rhinoplasty to deliver effective and long-lasting results for her patients. We also offer the option of providing 3D models that can show the situation both before and after the results.

Deciding on Nose Surgery

If you are considering having rhinoplasty, book a preliminary consultation with your surgeon to seek expert advice. During this consultation, discuss the areas of your nose that are causing you discomfort, in line with your doctor’s objectives, and share your thoughts on the possible procedures.

Don’t forget that there’s no such thing as a perfect nose. Even if you have surgery, it will enhance your facial features and bring out your unique, natural beauty. A surgeon can identify the facial features that make you unique and explain how changes could enhance your appearance. The surgeon will assess the structure of your nose and your other facial features. Following this assessment, provided your expectations are realistic, we will advise you on the risks, recovery time and costs, whilst taking your general health into account. There are various techniques for reshaping the nose. Once you have decided to go ahead, your surgeon will explain exactly what they propose to do.

If you have health insurance, make sure you speak to your insurer in advance so that you know what is covered and what you will need to pay for. Health insurance does not usually cover procedures carried out solely for cosmetic reasons.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Incisions are made inside the nostrils; this is a technique with a limited surgical field. Open Rhinoplasty,

It involves making an incision along the tissue between the nostrils and inside the nostrils; these incisions heal quickly, and the scars are not visible once healed.

Rhinoplasty usually takes between 1.5 and 3 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. If additional cartilage is required to enlarge the nose, it is often taken from the patient’s nasal septum. In revision rhinoplasty, which is performed to correct deformities caused by a previous procedure, this cartilage may be taken from an ear or a rib, although approved cadaveric cartilage may also be used in some cases. Due to the demands on the cartilage and the potential for scarring, revision rhinoplasty is a more challenging procedure; it is therefore important that it is performed by a highly skilled surgeon.

Rhinoplasty to Correct the Nasal Septum

Nasal surgery performed to correct a blocked airway requires a careful assessment of the nasal structure in relation to breathing. Correction of a deviated septum—one of the most common causes of breathing difficulties—is achieved by adjusting the structure of the nose so that it fits more comfortably.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty

After the operation, most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, which can be managed with medication. However, the initial phase of the recovery period may temporarily affect your quality of life at work and in social settings due to possible bruising under the eyes and the need to wear an eye patch. To protect the nasal bones and cartilage, patients should ensure they wear a splint for approximately one week following rhinoplasty.

In addition, patients should avoid strenuous activities such as running or swimming for two to three weeks, and should avoid wearing glasses for four to five weeks. The nose is a complex structure made up of delicate cartilage and bone. A small change in one part of the structure affects the rest of the nose. For this reason, it is important that you are supported by a specialist doctor throughout this process in order to achieve a natural and functional result.
